The fashion trends we NEED to ditch

19/06/2024

For those that thought they had seen the back of Ugg boots and flared jeans, we’ve got news. In recent years we are seeing a BIG return to noughties fashion.

But are some trends best left in the past? In light of the 00s resurgence, we are looking at what trends should not be making the comeback cut.

We have asked 14,065 people what 00s fashion they would like to get rid of. With the top 5 items, we analysed the percentage spilt among the total respondents of 2,195 who voted for these items.

Almost half of Brits HATE Crocs

The clog-like shoes that have held us in a vice-like grip since 2002 have, officially, been voted as the trend to dump on your annual declutter.

While the current trend is about repurposing early 90s and 00s garments, almost half (48%) of respondents agreed that Cros are their least favourite trend.

Despite this, Crocs have the most monthly average searches on Google with a whopping 497,000 searches across the UK, making it the most searched-for item in our top 5 trends. On top of this, Google Trends data can reveal from the last 12 months that there’s a 35% monthly increase in interest for Crocs within the UK.

With that said, if you don’t feel ready to part with your Crocs, they are an excellent gardening shoe!

Over one in six say goodbye to Oodies

Over one in six respondents (16%) said that the Oodie is the second worst trend of the moment, with those respondents believing that the ‘jumper crossed with a blanket’ is an item of clothing people need to get rid of this spring clean. However, with the cloud-like jumper offering oodles of comfort, we might have to hide ours!

Oodies are second place in search interest from our top five trends, with 152,000 searches in the UK. However, this trend has dropped by 36% interest over the past month according to Google Trends, most likely due to the warmer months coming ahead!

Brits are begging each other to ditch leggings

From the top five items, leggings are the least searched-for item with an average monthly search volume of 36,000 across the UK. Despite this, searches for leggings have increased by 47% from March 2019 to February 2023, coinciding with the resurgence of 00s fashion.

They come in all forms, from leather leggings, jeggings, flared leggings, and split hem leggings. But, whatever form, almost one in six respondents (14.4%) have said that we need to get rid of them as part of our decluttering.

A tenth of Brits say hoodies are not so good-ie

Looks as though your go-to gym kit should stop making an everyday appearance for casual attire, as a tenth of respondents (10.4%) said that hoodies should be ditched from the latest fashion trend.

From the top five items, hoodies are the second least searched-for item with an average monthly search volume of 78,000 across the UK. They’ve also seen a 7% decrease in search interest in the past month, according to Google Trends data.

Uggs should get the boot, one in ten agree

In a further nod to the 00s, ugg boots made a HUGE comeback in the previous year. But, they’ve made it to fifth place on the list of trends to dump. With almost one in ten (9.6%) respondents agreeing Uggs should get the boot from the latest fashion trends.
